Summertime

Posted on

I have avoided the Florida summer by returning home to Washington for a while. I definitely appreciate he cooler weather, especially when I hear people in florida complaining about the heat. However as I sit here waiting for my parents to be ready to leave, one thing I am not fond of in Washington comes to mind. The traffic. We shall see how it compares once I have experienced having a car in both places.

Best study environment

Everyone has to find their best studying environment, whether that’s a library, park, Starbucks, etc. is an individual choice. However, I find I study best at home. I like to set the environment up around me to be relaxing, calm and comfortable. Sometimes this works to my disadvantage and I end up getting too comfortable and wanting to take a nap, or distracted because of course everything else I want to do is in my home. I take frequent breaks. BUT I always get things done.

I like to light a candle, put some music on Pandora or iTunes, and drink tea. 🙂

Happy studying!

Just over a month + 1 week

After a little bit more than a month of library school, I feel qualified to say… this hasn’t been as hard as I expected. After being absent from all forms of schooling for around 5 months, before starting my master’s program, I was thinking that it might be hard to get used to school again. That hasn’t really been the case. The assignments are fun and seem relevant to my future, and the professors seem to care about helping you. (Who am I to say that they DO or DO NOT, I only know about the way I perceive them.)

Adjusting to Florida is still kind of a challenge. I feel like this is a long vacation with class two days a week instead of like this is a place I will be living for quite some time. Maybe that’s why I have trouble getting motivated to do my reading/assignments. Need to get on that. The majority of my smaller assignments each week are due on Sundays by midnight and that is frustrating. I just want to enjoy my weekend. This has caused me to try to get these done earlier in the week, to give myself a chance to relax on the weekend and do most of my work during the week like a normal student.

Good luck in your studies!

Time Zones

Posted on

Time zones are funny. I don’t really understand why I haven’t adjusted… Or maybe it’s because I am sleeping in so late now that I am not tired at 1 in the morning anymore. I have been procrastinating and not paying attention to my READING that I need to do for school, so I’m planning on not watching almost an entire television season tomorrow and getting stuff done instead.

Lessons about Florida:

1. You do not need to wear tights during the day. (Maybe not even at night)

2. Rabbits live in used car lots.

3. Even though there are big pipes sticking out the ground it does not mean that there are necessarily alligators waiting to get you. Don’t be so jumpy.

4. Sometimes there is no crosswalk. Sometimes it will just never turn for you. And u-turns seem to be legal everywhere.

School has begun!

Posted on

I had my first class yesterday and I must say I have never been more confident that this is what I want to do! Library science all the way.

My professor was enthusiastic, charming and amusing; the students had varied, diverse backgrounds and experiences and are all in different stages of the program, having a lot to offer as individuals. Second class starts in about 20 minutes and I am just hoping it is as great as yesterday’s. Got some readings to do and such, but with only 2 classes a week I think I will be fine. Keep you updated!

Packing!

Packing is always harder than it seems. I have made my list but am no longer sure that everything on it will fit in a suitcase or two (at least 2.) I thought it would be nice to go somewhere new and start life there unencumbered by tons of stuff but aren’t we all more materialistic than we think we are? Plus it is so close to the holidays that I just have that much more stress. But I have chosen my graduate program and am just now getting my final papers and packing done so I can leave on January 1st!

I’m in! And Mad Men.

I don’t know which school I will end up going to, but I can tell you that I have been accepted to 2 so far. (One of them is in my top 5!) Yes, I did only apply to 9 or 10 schools total, but I was fairly confident that these were the only schools I wanted to actually attend that also started before next fall, which would be too long for me to wait.

I’ve been working a lot lately and I don’t know if my job will transfer with me when I go away to grad school, so I’ve got to get all I can out of it now!

Also, I’ve been obsessed with Mad Men. I know I’m getting on the mad-men-train pretty late, but now I can watch all 4 seasons on Netflix and go right on through without interruption or advertisements. I love 1960s style and the characters are so easy to care about and get attached to. It reminds me of a (and it feels weird to say this!) more modern soap opera. It’s not super dramatic and unbelievable like, say, Young and the Restless, so it’s more interesting to me.

Anyway, that’s all the updating I had to do. See you later!
